Has Your Career Path Or Job Search Fallen Short Of Your Expectations?
Is dissatisfaction with your job or career creating conflict in your life? Do you feel discouraged by a lack of job prospects or not being able to figure out what to do with your talents and skill sets? Has a competitive job market and consistent rejection lowered your self-esteem and confidence in your abilities?
Perhaps you are growing frustrated with your work environment, coworkers, or boss. You may be unable to identify your dissatisfaction and are trying to figure out if it’s time to simply find a new job or make a change in career altogether. Or maybe you have a sense of the direction you would like to go in but need help with the practical components of the job search.
Alternatively, you may have been laid off or terminated as a result of drastic shifts in the economy. As a result, you are under the pressure of a job market that is even more competitive than usual and struggling to gain the confidence you need to take the next steps forward. It may be that years have passed since you last applied for a job, and thus, you are a little rusty with best practices for updating your resumé, writing a cover letter, or preparing for an interview.
Dissatisfaction with a job or career, while highly common, can be extremely stressful and discouraging. There are so many factors at play when it comes to determining the best course of action for how to make a livelihood. Though I am a trained mental health therapist, I am uniquely prepared to offer career advice and guidance, too, so that you can achieve your greatest potential.
Most People Encounter Career Challenges Throughout Their Professional Lives
A 2019 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the average worker in the US will change jobs twelve times in their lives. Such a number demonstrates that career challenges are incredibly common and that people do not want to stay at a job that is unfulfilling or lacking in some way.
As students, we are groomed to believe that if we pursue our educational goals, then we will be naturally set up to obtain the career of our dreams. Yet upon graduation or transition from one thing to the next, we are often faced with a highly competitive job market or a career path that doesn’t meet what we envisioned for our future.
In addition, there are external factors to consider when we make a job or career change, like family and financial obligations. So often, we are hyper-focused on what pays well only to find that we are disillusioned with our workplace or personally unfulfilled by the nature of the work we do.
Regardless if you are just starting off in the job market or returning to it after deciding to make a change, practice and preparation are necessary for success. As a mental health counselor with a unique background in career assessment and navigation, I look forward to helping you secure a satisfying and lucrative job.
You Can Gain Meaningful Insights And Skills With Career Counseling
If challenging aspects of your career or job search are creating distress, dissatisfaction, anxiety, and interpersonal conflict in your daily life, counseling offers you the opportunity to explore your options. Whether you are figuring out if you want to stay or leave your job, change careers entirely, or in the process of finding a new position, I can offer insight and support.
Depending on your needs, we will work together to establish a plan and create a pathway for success. If what you require is a career assessment to identify potential professions to match your skills, I will conduct a Strong Interest Inventory, as well as a personality test, to gauge career options.
If, on the other hand, you are already confident in what you would like to pursue, I am qualified to help you begin the job search. By having a background in HR that required me to review thousands of resumés and conduct many interviews, I maintain valuable perspective on what makes a strong candidate for a job. Whatever your needs may be, we will establish a toolkit for updating your resumé, creating a strong cover letter, and preparing for an interview.
It could also be that you aren’t even sure of the best course of action, but you know that you need a change. If that is the case, we will explore the reasons why you seek career counseling and address your concerns in a way that is best suited for your individual needs. In reflecting, you may find that you actually want to stay in your current role but that you need guidance on asking for a raise, maintaining stress and time management, or creating a better work-life balance. This is where my background in therapy becomes particularly useful. No matter what help you need when it comes to your job or career, we will form a plan together and determine the best way counseling can help you to achieve your goals.
As a certified therapist with a Master’s in Human Resource Management and experience working in the corporate sector, I can provide useful information to make your career goals meet your mental health needs. My insight can help you to find clarity about career decisions, achieve work-life balance, and maintain the career satisfaction you need in order to be happy both at work and at home.
Perhaps you are interested in counseling to help you with a job or career, but you have questions…
What is the difference between a career counselor and a career coach?
The biggest difference between a coach and a counselor is often the difference in educational background. Having a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, I am prepared to offer professional insight into your emotional needs in areas where a coach may not be qualified. While a career coach or consultant can conduct a skills assessment or strong interest inventory, my expertise in counseling makes me better suited to identify your strengths and help you find fulfillment in your work.
I am concerned about the cost of career counseling.
Career counseling is an investment in yourself, your satisfaction at work, and your future earning potential. It can provide you with the skills and insight you need to acquire a higher paying position, giving counseling the potential to “pay off” in the long term.
If you are concerned about cost due to a layoff or underpaying job, let me know. I will work with your financial needs on a case-by-case basis. I also offer a free consultation so that you can assess if my career counseling services will be beneficial for your needs.
How long does the process of career counseling take?
The length of your time spent in session for career counseling will vary based on your needs. However, it is likely to be a quicker and more straightforward process than therapy for other presenting concerns. You may be surprised at how quickly you will gain the insight and skill sets you need to take the next steps in your career.
